Research Awards Descriptions

Research Support Grants
$75,000
Furthers the development of experienced scientific investigators who are committed to problems related to oral and maxillofacial surgery, and encourages promising lines of research and clinical investigation. One year award.

The eligibility requirements for the Research Support Grant allow a non-OMS to serve as the principal investigator as long as the co-principal investigator is a qualified OMS in an active role with a stated time commitment in objective terms (see guidelines, page 1, section IIB). The OMS co-principal investigator must contribute at least 10% effort. A statement listing the percentage of effort by the co-principal investigator must be submitted with the with the signatures of both the principal and co-principal investigators. Please note that funds for the principal and co-principal investigators may comprise only up to 50% of the budget. Budget to support the principal and co-principal investigators may only be requested as salary and not for technical assistance. If technical assistance (e.g. radiological, immuno-biological support) is requested, the specific nature of the technical assistance must be specified in the budget justification.

Student Research Training Award
$12,500
Attracts high quality health profession students to biomedical and behavioral research applicable to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Also increase awareness of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a career choice for the professional student. One year award.

Student Research Training Award: The budget for the Student Research Training Award is to be used to support five (5) Student Research Training projects at $2,500 each. Budget support for professional staff mentors may not be included with the budget. The budget and budget justification (Addendum A) is intended to reflect the fact that funds are available within the institution to support the program.

Practitioner Innovation Development Award
$5,000
Encourages those in private practice to develop a technique or therapy applicable to clinical practice. One year award.

Synthes Award
$15,000
Synthes Maxillofacial offers $15,000 to a CODA Accredited OMS teaching center which has demonstrated excellence in the care of trauma patients and in the reconstruction of patients with significant facial defects. The award will include an appropriate recognition plaque and Synthes will additionally donate $5,000 to the Foundation with each award. Application deadline is May 2, 2008.

Zimmer Award
$55,000
Zimmer offers $55,000 to an experienced investigator whose research is focused on implantology. To apply, please complete the Research Support Grant application.

Applying for Research Awards

The application deadline for research awards is Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 5pm EST. Applications will be reviewed for funding the following year. Applications will only be accepted electronically via FTP! No e-mail submissions will be accepted!

You can now complete the application and save it to your desktop using only Acrobat Reader! You must have Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher. If you don't have Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher, please download the latest version.

FTP Instructions

Before you upload the application from your computer please create a new folder on your computer and label it with the name of the award you are applying for and the primary PI's last name. Ex: Research Support Grant - Smith. Place the application and any addendums in this folder. Upload this entire folder to the FTP site.

In order to upload your application folder you will need to use an FTP program with the following settings:

Host Address: ftp.omsfoundation.org
Username: apply@ftp.omsfoundation.org
Password: apply

After you upload the folder you will not see any change on the remote side (this is for your protection, the ftp server will not allow listing of files from the remote side). If you do not have an FTP client you can download and install FileZilla.
