OMS Foundation Awards at the 2013 AAOMS Annual Meeting
Torch Award: The OMSF Alliance was selected as the recipient of the OMSF Torch Award. The Torch Award recognizes an individual or organization who has provided exemplary service and made significant contributions in fostering the purposes of the Foundation and/or groups. Joan Tu, current Chair of the Alliance, accepted the award on behalf of the Alliance. The Alliance has been serving the specialty and the OMS Foundation for 20 years.
Research Recognition Award: The OMSF was pleased to present the 2013 Research Recognition Award to Dr. James Q. Swift of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The purpose of this most distinguished award is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the specialty through their participation in and support of research within the specialty. Dr. James Q. Swift is Professor and Director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is a past President of the American Dental Education Association as well as a past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Swift’s OMSF-supported research was the springboard for an RO1 award from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research to study inflammatory mediators and pain. His research interests include temporomandibular joint disease, pathophysiology of third molars, inflammation, pain mediators, neuropeptides and analgesics. He has authored many scientific publications and book chapters.
Ambassador Service Award: Dr. Richard A. Crinzi was the recipient of the 2013 Gerald E. Hanson Ambassador Service Award. This award, presented only when deemed appropriate, is given to a leader amongst OMSF Ambassadors who has shown outstanding service to the Foundation. Dr. Crinzi’s support of the OMSF and his advocacy of research and education in our specialty through the REAP annual fund have been instrumental in building the much-needed resources of the OMS Foundation for the future.
OMSF Daniel M. Laskin Award: The 2013 OMSF Laskin Award was presented for the most the outstanding article published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2012. This year the article was titled “Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 Combined with an Osteoconductive Bulking Agent for Mandibular Continuity Defects in Non-Human Primates” that appeared in JOMS, Vol. 70, Issue 11, Pgs. 703-716.
